2005 Nivea World Cup Sylt PreviewRegistration Day
The PWA riders have gathered on the German island of Sylt for the final event on the 2005 PWA calendar. The 2005 Nivea World Cup Sylt hosts the final for both the wave and racing tour and therefore promises to deliver a nerve wrecking eleven days of competition. Traditionally the sailors have been welcomed today by an overwhelming number of spectators during the opening ceremony, setting the tone for one of the biggest events on the tour.
According to the latest forecasts, the crowds are in for a spectacular show during the course of the event. With winds over 40 knots accompanied by a massive swell expected later this week, the wave sailors will have their hands full on Sylt's radical conditions. For the moment, Brazil's Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro/ Naish) holds on firmly to the crown after winning the Gran Canaria wave event and coming in second in both Guincho and Maui, but Seadi will have to stay on top of things right till the end. The top six contenders are all still well in the game for the title as it all comes down to what happens in the next days of Sylt's mayhem conditions.
"The forecast is looking really good right now, so hopefully it will hold up. Of course I hope to win this one, but we'll have to see and wait for the end of the event to find out who takes it," as Kauli Seadi comments on things to come. "This is the first time I've come here in the lead, so I'm stoked no matter what happens here."
Everything is still up for grabs in the women's wave division as well, where Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral/ North) is looking down on the rest of the fleet from the top, with Iballa Moreno (E-63, Mistral/ North) and Karin Jaggi (Z-14, F2) breathing down her neck looking to shake up the ranking in the closing contest of the season.
In the racing competition, Micah Buzianis (USA-34, F2/North) leads the way before Bjorn Dunkerbeck (E-11, North) after the first Slalom 42 event in Fuerteventura this summer and once again, it's all wide open for the overall title.
The forecast for both racing and wave performance is looking excellent for the days to come, so stay tuned to www.pwaworldtour.com as the action kicks off tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Throughout the event, www.pwaworldtour.com has all the latest news, pictures and results from Sylt, Germany and of course the outcome of the 2005 wave and racing season.

Spain intercepts 50 'aliens': "Spain intercepts 50 'aliens'
19/09/2005 22:08 - (SA)Fuerteventura - Spanish police on Monday intercepted two boatloads of would-be African immigrants carrying almost 50 people on Monday.
A first vessel had 11 Moroccans on board and the second was carrying 37 people from sub-Saharan Africa, maritime rescue authorities said at Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.
Thousands of illegal immigrants a year try to make their way to Spain, usually via the Strait of Gibraltar but also via the Canary Islands, making perilous crossings in rickety boats called pateras. Each year, an undetermined number either drown or die from hypothermia.
In 2004, 15 675 illegal immigrants travelling on 740 boats were intercepted, according to official Spanish figures. "

The island hospital is small, sparsely equipped and very often the patients are so large that they have to be tipped sideways to get them to the operating table.Fortunately, the patients are tough enough to withstand being knocked against a doorframe -- they are protected by a solid shell bigger than a manhole cover. It takes more than rough handling to kill off a loggerhead turtle. Seen here, a loggerhead turtle approaches the sea at the Puerto Lajas beach in the Spanish Canary Islands of Fuerteventura,
Airport to offer more holiday flights
MORE flights to popular holidayspots and three new destinations have been added to Humberside Airport's summer schedules.
Charter airline Excel Airways had already signed up to provide nine weekly departures from the airport from next summer, but has increased that to 19.
Its decision to commit a second aircraft to the venture means passengers will be able to fly for the first time from Humberside to Fuerteventura, Zante (Zakynthos) and Rhodes.
About 65,000 passengers are predicted to fly from Humberside to destinations both on the Spanish mainland, including Alicante and Malaga, and the Canary Islands, Paphos in Cyprus, and Dalaman on Turkey's Mediterranean coast in what the airport calls one of its "most diverse and exciting programmes to date".
In addition passengers will also be able to fly to Fuerteventura with Thompson on Wednesdays from next summer.
The airline took a hit in 2005 with the opening of Robin Hood Airport at Doncaster but is now predicting summer 2006 passenger figures will more than exceed its 2004 record.
The airport's managing director Rob Goldsmith said: "We were delighted when Excel decided to launch their first- ever programme of flights from Humberside Airport. As we continued to develop the programme we saw that there was potential for Excel to introduce an even bigger and better service.
"This announcement is great news for passengers from the region as there is now more choice than ever before from their local airport."
The airport, which was bought by the Manchester Airport Group six years ago, moved into profit in 2003 after years of losses. It now attracts 530,000 customers a year.

It was one of the highest number of would-be illegal immigrants detained in 48 hours in Spain so far this year.
A police spokesman said 160 were intercepted in rubber boats off the coast of Granada. A further 39 were arrested on land after having arrived by sea.
Elsewhere, 70 Africans were intercepted off the coast of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura and other 50 in the area of the small fishing town of Tarifa, Europes southernmost tip.
