For the past six years local German photographer and artist Jo Hammer has been puzzling over the ancient past of Fuerteventura

When he first discovered some strange looking stones in the North of the island Jo Hammer believed he had found something much more than just shaped by nature, but in fact worked by people.. Later on that same year while searching for more stones, he also discovered a huge ‘symbol’ laid in rocks on the side of a mountain in Betancuria (pictured below) and underneath, some form of writing.

Was this connected to the carvings of 'feet' (below) that were discovered in 1978 on the side of Mount Tyndaya? Were the stones he found from some ancient settlement? Many like to see Fuerteventura as the most ‘magical’ Canary Island, with it's moonlike landscapes and incredible coastlines its easy to see why. Have a look at some these images of stones, symbols and birds and see what you think.

Jo is now working on his own website devoted to his work called Atlantura (Atlantis and Fuerteventura) He is also searching for an archaeological team of some kind who may be interested in his work on Fuerteventura

His excellent photographs of Fuerteventura are also for sale, some of which can be seen on the Cotillo page of this website.
