Why is a ‘hit’ misleading?

Small websites in an attempt to make their sites seem more popular than they really are, often quote the number of 'hits' their site receives.
A ‘hit’ is just a single file request in the access log of a Web server. A view of 1 page with 40 elements (eg picture) will result in 41 hits: 1 for the HTML text file and 1 for each of the elements. If a visitor looks at just 10 such pages, that will amount to 410 ‘hits’ for 1 visit.
A ‘hit’ is a very misleading indicator of how many visitors a site really receives. We receive almost 6 million 'hits' per month - clearly a silly figure.
A much more accurate figure to look out for is the number of "Unique Visitors per day"
